The Trieste-Opicina tramway is transport, but it has long been one of the city's signature experiences. The line climbs from the edge of central Trieste toward the Karst plateau, historically using a cable-assisted section for the steepest part, and turns a practical suburban journey into a miniature mountain railway.
Service has had long interruptions, so check the current status before building a day around it. When running, it is a lovely way to feel Trieste's geography: sea-level Austro-Italian city below, limestone plateau above, and Slovenia not far beyond the ridge.
