Slingshot Museum (Museo della Fionda)

A quirky collection of slingshots — and an annual prize for those who metaphorically defend the underdog

An unexpected find in a medieval Ligurian town: a museum dedicated entirely to the slingshot (fionda in Italian), housed in a small space in the historic centre. The collection includes handmade slingshots from dozens of countries, historical examples, and miniature replicas, all assembled by a collector who became fascinated by the simple weapon's symbolic role as the tool of the underdog.

The museum is small but memorable — the kind of place that takes fifteen minutes to see and stays with you. Entry is typically free or by small donation. The combination of the collection and the annual prize the museum awards makes it one of the more distinctive cultural institutions on the Ligurian Riviera.

A story
Each year the Slingshot Museum awards a slingshot to a person or organisation that has "pulled metaphorical slings in favour of the weak and marginalised." The award has gone to journalists, activists, and public interest lawyers. The museum's founder, Manrico Dell'Agnola, spent decades collecting and crafting slingshots from across the world before opening the museum in Albenga.
