Grotta di Bergeggi

A sea cave at the base of the cliffs, 37 metres long and 17 metres wide. Its mouth opens at sea level and is only accessible by boat or by swimming in from the shore on calm days. The cave was occupied from the Neolithic period through the Roman era — a sequence of habitation spanning thousands of years — and archaeological finds from inside it are held in the Savona civic museum.

On a bright day the light entering the mouth of the cave reflects off the water in shades of turquoise and green. Kayakers and snorkellers who make it inside on a flat sea find an echo chamber of dripping rock and filtered blue light. If the sea is rough, don't attempt it.
