Torre del Mare

One of two medieval watchtowers that survive from Bergeggi's coastal defence network. This one stands at the base of the headland near the beach — a squat, stone structure that once formed part of a chain of signal towers running along the Ligurian coast, allowing coastal communities to raise the alarm when raider ships were sighted at sea.

The tower is not open to visitors, but it is easy enough to walk past and photograph. It sits in the narrow strip between the railway line and the sea, an odd juxtaposition of medieval stonework and modern infrastructure that is very Ligurian.
