Finalborgo is a perfectly preserved medieval walled village about two kilometres inland from the beach, consistently listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy. The circuit of 15th-century walls — crumbling in places, repaired in others — encloses a tight grid of cobbled lanes, piazzas, arcaded streets, and medieval and Baroque palaces in warm ochre and terracotta.
The village's centrepiece is the church of San Biagio (14th century, with a later Baroque facade), the Palazzo del Comune, and the convent of Santa Caterina, which houses the Civic Museum of Finale and its extraordinary Paleolithic collection from the cave sites above town. On Sunday mornings a food market fills the main piazza with local producers selling Ligurian olive oil, cheese, dried herbs, and wine.
Finalborgo has a good selection of restaurants and bars in its narrow lanes — arrive hungry. The walk from Finalmarina takes 20 minutes uphill through olive groves, or you can take the bus.
