Chiesa di San Giorgio

The white church of San Giorgio perches on the lighthouse promontory above the harbour, a short walk up the same path that leads to Castello Brown. Dating to 1154 and rebuilt several times, it is dedicated to St George, the patron saint of Portofino, whose relics arrived here from the Holy Land. The spot commands the classic view of Portofino's harbour — the photograph that appears on every postcard is taken from somewhere near here.

A story
The church's relics of St George were brought to Portofino by sailors returning from the Crusades in the 12th century. The building was destroyed during World War II Allied bombardments in 1943 and completely rebuilt afterwards — so while the site is ancient, almost everything you see today dates from the postwar reconstruction.
