Loggia dei Militi

The Loggia dei Militi is a Gothic loggia built in 1292 on the east side of the Piazza del Comune, originally serving as the assembly hall of the city's militia. It is a small but elegant building — five round-headed arches on slender columns opening onto the piazza, with decorative relief carving above and a corbelled cornice at the roofline. The proportions are finely judged and it holds its own compositionally against the much larger cathedral and tower.

The building is now used for cultural events and exhibitions; the ground floor loggia is generally open and accessible. It is one of three civic buildings that complete the Piazza del Comune ensemble along with the Palazzo Comunale and the Palazzo Cittanova, and its scale is perfectly calibrated to the space — neither too large nor too small.

A story
The loggia was built in 1292 as the meeting place of the city's militia captains. Its name means "Loggia of the Soldiers." The building represents the civic military power of the commune at a moment when Cremona was a significant independent city-state before the Visconti of Milan absorbed it in 1334. The relief carvings on the facade include heraldic shields and narrative scenes that have been interpreted as relating to the city's military history.
