The cafés and bars facing Piazza del Plebiscito — Ancona's main historic square, lined with churches and Renaissance buildings — are the natural place for an early evening aperitivo. Rosso Conero by the glass is the local choice; Verdicchio and a growing selection of craft beers from Marchigian microbreweries are also on offer. Tables outside fill up from around 18:00; the atmosphere is thoroughly local, with none of the tourist markup of better-known Italian cities.
