The longer of Ascoli's two central squares, sitting east of Piazza del Popolo and closed at one end by the cathedral, at the other by the Palazzo dell'Arengo. Three of the city's museums open onto the square — the Pinacoteca, the Diocesan Museum, and the Archaeological Museum — making this the obvious base for a half-day of culture.
Two bronze sea-horse fountains by Giorgio Paci, modelled on a Bernini original, occupy the centre. The cafes along the south side are quieter than those on Piazza del Popolo but no worse for it; the morning espresso here is a quiet ritual.
