Books

For Recanati there is really only one writer to read, and you should read him. Everything by Giacomo Leopardi is set against or born from this town, and the more you know of his work the more the small streets and the hill behind the house mean.

Start with the Canti — Leopardi's collected lyric poems, including L'Infinito, Il Sabato del Villaggio, A Silvia, Le Ricordanze and Il Passero Solitario, all written here. The standard English translation is Jonathan Galassi's (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2010), which prints the Italian and English on facing pages.

For prose, the Zibaldone — the gigantic philosophical notebook Leopardi kept between 1817 and 1832 — is the great unfinished masterpiece. The complete English edition (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2013) runs to over two thousand pages; dip in rather than read through. The Operette Morali (Penguin Classics has a good translation) is a shorter and easier way into his thought: a series of philosophical dialogues, often darkly funny, on death, illusion and the futility of human hope.
