Recanati is a small town, and the best of it can be seen on foot in a leisurely day. The unmissable visit is Casa Leopardi with its 20,000-volume library, where the poet read himself almost blind. The hill of the Colle dell'Infinito behind the house is the spot that gave him the most famous poem in Italian, L'Infinito. From there the old town climbs gently to the Piazza Giacomo Leopardi at the centre, with the seventeenth-century Palazzo Comunale, the Torre del Borgo, and a handful of churches worth a quick look. The Villa Colloredo Mels, on the western edge of town, holds one of the best small collections of Lorenzo Lotto paintings outside the Marche regional museum in Loreto.
