Punta delle Colonne

Punta delle Colonne (Column Point) is the southwest tip of Isola di San Pietro, a headland where basalt columns rise from the sea in dramatic formations. The columns are the result of ancient volcanic activity and create a coastline of dark geometric pillars against the blue water. It is the most visually striking natural feature on the island.

The point is accessible on foot from La Bobba beach (about 30 minutes along a coastal path) or by boat from Carloforte. The waters around the point are crystal clear and popular with snorkellers and divers. There is no shade and no facilities, so bring water and sun protection.

A story
The basalt columns at Punta delle Colonne were formed by volcanic activity and are geologically similar to the famous Giant's Causeway in Ireland — both are the result of slow cooling lava creating hexagonal column structures. The Sardinian columns are less uniform than the Irish ones, which gives them a rougher, more dramatic character. Ancient sailors called this the "Columns of Hercules of Sardinia," though the more famous Cape always refers to Gibraltar.
