The Saline di Carloforte are the old salt pans just outside town, where shallow water, embankments, and lagoon edges create one of San Pietro island's easiest nature walks. Flamingos and other waterbirds are the main attraction, especially when the light catches the pink water and white salt margins.
It is a gentle stop rather than a major excursion. Go early or late for cooler temperatures and better bird activity, and combine it with the town waterfront or a drive toward the island's rockier coast.
