Coddu Vecchiu Giants' Tomb

One of the finest and most intact Nuragic collective tombs in Sardinia, near Arzachena

Coddu Vecchiu is among the best-preserved and most dramatic Giants' Tombs in Sardinia, located near the town of Arzachena about 25km north of Olbia. The monument dates from the Middle Bronze Age (around 1800–1400 BC) and represents the Nuragic culture's approach to communal burial and ancestor veneration.

The tomb consists of a long gallery chamber, constructed from large upright slabs, fronted by a magnificent semicircular exedra with a tall central stele bearing a carved symbolic door. The scale of the stele — over four metres — and the quality of the stonework make this one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in the entire western Mediterranean. It is usually visited in combination with the nearby Li Loghi tomb and the Li Muri necropolis, all within a short drive of each other.

A story
The central stele at Coddu Vecchiu stands over four metres high and is carved with a blind door in its lower section — a symbolic entrance between the worlds of the living and the dead. This doorway was never meant to be used; it was a ritual gateway. The tomb was in continuous use as a burial site for several centuries around 1800–1400 BC, with bones and offerings added over generations.
