The Teatro Verdi is Sassari's main theatre and opera house, a handsome 19th-century building named for the composer Giuseppe Verdi. The interior is elegantly proportioned — a horseshoe auditorium with three tiers of boxes, decorated in red and gold in the Italian operatic tradition.
The theatre stages a regular programme of opera, classical music, and drama throughout the year. The season runs from autumn to spring. For opera in particular, Sassari punches above its provincial weight — the productions are often good and the prices are considerably lower than at the major Italian opera houses. Visiting the theatre for a performance is an authentic way to participate in Sassari's civic life.
