Fontana del Rosello

The Fontana del Rosello at the bottom of the steps on Corso Trinità is the most celebrated monument in Sassari, a late Renaissance fountain of white marble fed by a natural spring. The fountain dates from the early 17th century and is decorated with figures of the seasons, allegorical reliefs, and two lions at the top holding the arms of Sassari.

The fountain sits at the base of a long stone staircase that descends from the old town, and the approach down the steps reveals the fountain gradually, with the dome of the cathedral visible above. The surrounding area has been somewhat restored but retains its historic character. This is the traditional meeting point of Sassari, and locals still come to sit on the steps in the evening.

A story
The Fontana del Rosello is considered the symbol of Sassari. It was built between 1606 and 1635 by Genoese marble workers at the site of a medieval spring that had provided the city with fresh water since the earliest settlement. The four heads spouting water from the lower basin represent the four seasons. A local saying holds that anyone who drinks from the fountain will always return to Sassari.
