Porta Grazia is one of the most visible survivors of Messina's old Spanish citadel, a fortified complex that once controlled the harbour. The gate's carved stonework is a compact reminder of the city before earthquakes, war damage, and modern rebuilding changed so much of the waterfront.
It is a short stop rather than a destination in itself, but it rewards anyone tracing Messina's fortifications or looking beyond the cathedral-and-harbour circuit. The value is in the layering: a ceremonial gate now standing almost alone from a much larger military landscape.
