Montagna Grande, at 836 metres, is the highest point on Pantelleria and the cone of the island's main volcano. It hasn't erupted in historical times, but the fumaroles around its slopes still hiss steam, and there are several natural saunas in caves on the flanks.
A network of marked trails climbs through Mediterranean macchia, pine woodland and old terraces of vines and capers. From the summit on a clear day you can see the coast of Tunisia to the south and Sicily to the north-east. Allow three or four hours for a round trip from the trailhead above SibĂ ; bring water and start early because there is no shade once you are above the tree line.
