Victory Monument and Square

Contested Fascist-era monument in Bolzano, now interpreted through an exhibition on memory and identity.

Bolzano's Victory Monument is not a comfortable monument, and that is exactly why it matters. Built under Fascism, it long stood as a hard symbol of Italianisation in a German-speaking region, making the square one of the city's most politically charged places.

Today the site is more useful because interpretation has been added around it. Visit with that context in mind: the architecture is imposing, but the real subject is how South Tyrol handles memory, language, and power in public space.
