Padule di Fucecchio

The Padule di Fucecchio is the largest inland wetland in Italy, spreading across the flat land between Cerreto Guidi and Fucecchio to the west. This protected nature reserve is home to an exceptional variety of birds — herons, egrets, marsh harriers, bitterns, and during migration, thousands of waders and wildfowl — as well as otters, terrapins, and a rich aquatic flora. The reserve's network of paths and observation hides makes it accessible on foot or by bicycle. Early morning visits in spring and autumn offer the best birdwatching; the light over the still water and reeds at dawn is extraordinary. The reserve is managed partly as a traditional eel fishery, a practice that has continued here for centuries.
