Montefioralle

Montefioralle sits on a low hilltop just above Greve, a ten-minute walk up a cypress-lined path from the town. Inside its elliptical medieval walls, the village has changed remarkably little in six centuries. Two narrow lanes loop around the inner circuit; the houses have stone arches and external staircases; cats occupy the sunny corners.

The views from the walls over the Chianti hills — vine terraces, olive groves, cypress lines, and not a single modern building in sight — are the best in the area. There is a good church with works from the Florentine school, and a small wine bar in one of the houses on the main lane.

In late July, Montefioralle hosts a small medieval festival with costumes and local food. For the rest of the year it is quiet and largely non-touristy, despite being only a short walk from Greve's piazza.

A story
Montefioralle is one of the few genuinely intact medieval villages in Tuscany — the elliptical walls are original, the lanes inside are too narrow for modern vehicles, and very little was built or changed between the fourteenth century and the twentieth. The Vespucci family, relatives of Amerigo Vespucci (who gave his name to the Americas), owned property here.
