Panzano in Chianti sits on a high ridge about 8 km south of Greve, with views in clear weather all the way to Siena. It is a small, quiet hilltop village most famous in the food world for its butcher, Dario Cecchini, whose shop Antica Macelleria Cecchini has attracted food pilgrims from around the world for decades.
Cecchini's shop sells extraordinary meat — bistecca fiorentina from Chianina cattle, lardo, salsiccia, and various prepared cuts — and the man himself is usually present, often reciting Dante. His associated restaurants (Solociccia, Darius, and the more informal Officina della Bistecca) offer set menus built around the same philosophy: no menus, the chef decides, communal tables.
Panzano also has its own Sunday market and the annual Festa della Stagion Bona on 25 April. The views from the village walls over the wine country are excellent; there are good walks down into the surrounding vineyards.
