Tombolo della Giannella

Long sand spit with open beaches between lagoon and sea

The Giannella is the northern of the two sand tomboli that link Orbetello to Monte Argentario — a six-kilometre ribbon of fine sand with the open Tyrrhenian on one side and the WWF lagoon on the other. The beach is long and gently sloping, good for families, with several stretches of free public access between the rows of lidos. The southern end is wilder and quieter.

The Strada Provinciale runs the length of the tombolo with pull-offs and pinewoods for picnics. In summer it gets busy with Roman weekenders; in spring and autumn you can have long sections almost to yourself.
