Spanish Windmill in the Lagoon

16th-century stone mill standing alone in the lagoon

A squat stone windmill stands out in the shallow water of the lagoon, perhaps two hundred metres from the lungomare — the last survivor of a row of nine that the Spanish governors put up in the 16th century to grind grain. With its conical roof and the long causeway of the town behind it, it is the most photographed view in Orbetello and the symbol of the place.

The best vantage is from the lungomare promenade on the western side of the old town, especially at sunset when the western lagoon turns pink.
