Pitigliano Aqueduct

The medieval aqueduct running along the northern approach to Pitigliano is one of the most striking features of the town's skyline. Built for the Orsini in the 16th century to bring water to the hilltop settlement from springs in the valley below, its arches march toward the rock on which the town sits and are best seen from the road arriving from the north.

The aqueduct is not a stand-alone destination — you walk past it entering the town — but it gives an immediate sense of how much effort went into maintaining life on this dramatic and inconvenient site. The whole structure of Pitigliano, with its cellars carved into the tuff, its water supply engineered from the valley, and its defences exploiting the natural cliff, is a lesson in the ingenuity required to hold a medieval hilltop town against the world below.
