Enfola

The tied island west of Portoferraio — a wooded headland joined to the coast by a narrow sand bar, with two small beaches.

Enfola is a small rocky headland — almost an island — about six kilometres west of Portoferraio along the coast road. It is joined to the mainland of Elba by a low sand bar a few metres wide that you can wade across in either direction, with a small pebble beach on each side. The northern beach is the more sheltered, the southern beach has the better view back across the bay to Portoferraio.

A signed loop trail circles the headland through aleppo pines and macchia in about an hour, with several viewpoints over the coast and the Tuscan archipelago. The water is exceptionally clear; the snorkelling along the rocks at the tip of the headland is among the best around Portoferraio. The small Tuna Fishery Museum at the road end — the old buildings of a tonnara that operated here until the 1950s — is worth a quick visit. Pay parking in summer.
