Day Trips

Most of Elba is within easy day-trip range from Portoferraio. Marciana Marina and the cable car up Monte Capanne from Marciana village are the obvious option — the highest point on the island and one of the best viewpoints in the Tuscan archipelago. Marina di Campo on the south coast is the largest beach town on Elba, with a long sweep of sand and a more touristy atmosphere than Portoferraio.

Further afield, the inland town of Capoliveri on the eastern hill is the prettiest village on Elba — a hilltop maze of lanes with several good restaurants. Rio nell'Elba in the north-east is the centre of the island's long iron-mining tradition and has a small museum. The smaller wine-growing villages along the western and southern coasts are worth driving through for the views even if you do not stop.

For a longer trip, the Tuscan archipelago islands of Capraia, Gorgona, and Pianosa are reachable by occasional summer boats from Portoferraio. The closest, Capraia, is a full day's outing with limited boat schedules.
