Portoferraio's sights split neatly between Medici and Napoleonic. The two great forts above the old town — Forte Falcone and Forte Stella — were built by Cosimo I de' Medici in the 1540s and still ring the historic centre. The compact warren of houses between them, formally Cosmopoli, repays a long walk. Napoleon's residence and his summer villa hold the best Napoleonic collection outside France. Add in two excellent town beaches just outside the walls, the small but worthwhile Linguella archaeological museum, and the cable car–ridden peak of Monte Capanne an easy excursion away, and there is more than enough to fill two or three days.
