San Gimignano is Vernaccia country, and the town's enoteche — wine bars with bottles lining the walls — are the best places to drink it. Vernaccia di San Gimignano is Italy's first-ever DOC wine, granted the designation in 1966, and the DOCG followed in 1993. It's a dry, crisp white that ranges from lean and mineral to fuller and barrel-aged versions. Most enoteche will pour a flight for a few euros.
The town also produces a small amount of red wine under the San Gimignano DOC. For coffee and pastries, the bars around the Piazza della Cisterna are convenient and perfectly decent.
