San Gimignano is best experienced by simply walking the medieval streets and soaking up the atmosphere. The Piazza della Cisterna and the Palazzo del Popolo (town hall) are the main landmarks, and the views from the Rocca citadel take in the full sweep of the Tuscan hills. The towers themselves — 14 surviving from an original 70-plus — are the town's defining feature.
