Osteria del Carcere

A small osteria occupying the vaulted medieval prison cells beneath the Palazzo del Popolo, reached by a stone staircase from the street. The setting — low ceilings, stone walls, the kind of cool darkness that medieval builders achieved without refrigeration — is memorable enough on its own, but the food is the main reason to go. The menu runs to classic Sienese dishes: pici al ragù di cinghiale (hand-rolled pasta with wild boar sauce), ribollita, bistecca di Chianina, and the kind of desserts that make you think about ordering another.

The wine list focuses on local Vernaccia and Chianti. It's a small room and fills quickly; booking ahead is strongly recommended, particularly in summer and on weekends.
