Church of Sant'Agostino

A 13th-century Gothic church at the northern end of the walled town, a ten-minute walk from the Piazza della Cisterna, and consistently overlooked by visitors who don't make it past the main piazza. That's their loss. The apse behind the altar is entirely frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli, who painted seventeen scenes from the life of St Augustine between 1464 and 1465. Gozzoli was one of the finest narrative painters of the Quattrocento, and this cycle — vivid, detailed, and well-preserved — is among his best work outside Florence.

The church also contains a marble altarpiece by Benedetto da Maiano (1495) and a chapelhouse with further frescoes. Admission is charged but modest. The relative quiet of this end of town, and the quality of what's inside, makes Sant'Agostino one of the most rewarding stops in San Gimignano.
