Bar Roma

Bar Roma has been a fixture on Via Roma for decades and is one of the best places to observe the Courmayeur ritual of the early-evening aperitivo. The bar makes a good Negroni and keeps a generous spread of snacks alongside it, in the proper Italian fashion. It is a straightforward, unpretentious place that caters to locals as well as visitors — a useful distinction in a resort town where many bars cater entirely to the ski crowd.

The terrace fills up from late afternoon in both winter and summer. In winter, people arrive in ski boots and gradually change into something smarter; in summer, hikers and cyclists mix with the cocktail crowd. Either way, this is the place to sit and watch the passeggiata unfold along Via Roma as the evening light catches the peaks above.
