Skiing in Courmayeur

Intermediate skiing under Mont Blanc's south face

Courmayeur's ski area spreads across the south face of the Mont Blanc massif, accessed from the village by gondola to Plan Checrouit (1,700 m) and then by further lifts up to around 2,750 m. The runs are predominantly red and blue — good for confident intermediates, less satisfying for experts looking for serious challenge. The scenery more than compensates: skiing with the Mont Blanc glacier directly overhead is not something you forget.

The resort is most enjoyable mid-week; at weekends the Milanese and Turinese arrive in force and the village can feel crowded. Snow reliability is generally good at higher elevations from December through March. Off-piste options exist on the Toula glacier and in the Vallee Blanche (accessed from the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car), but you'll need a guide.

A story
The off-piste route known as the Vallée Blanche is reached from Punta Helbronner via the Skyway Monte Bianco and descends through 24 kilometres of glacier terrain to Chamonix on the French side. It is the longest off-piste run in the Alps and requires a guide — but for experienced skiers, it is one of the great mountain days available anywhere.
