Sanguinetto's Scaliger fortress dates from the 14th century, when the lords of Verona built a chain of strongholds across the southern plain. The building has had a more civic afterlife than most: it now houses the town hall, the local theatre, and the municipal library. You can walk in during opening hours and find yourself in what was once a military fortification. The exterior, with its crenellated towers, is the more dramatic sight — well preserved and almost completely free of tourists.
