Things to Do

The Basso Veronese's main draw is its chain of castles and fortified towns, most of them built or reinforced by the Scaligeri — the medieval lords of Verona — and their rivals. Montagnana is the standout, with some of the best-preserved medieval walls in Italy. The smaller towns — Bevilacqua, Sanguinetto, Isola della Scala — each have their own fortification to explore, and most see almost no foreign visitors. In September, Isola della Scala hosts Italy's largest rice fair.
