Bibione Beach

Eight kilometres of wide, fine, gently shelving Adriatic sand

The main reason to come to Bibione: an eight-kilometre stretch of broad, soft sand that drops away gently into the Adriatic — shallow enough to wade out a hundred metres before the water reaches your waist, which makes it ideal for small children. Most of the sand is divided into private stabilimenti with rented umbrellas and loungers; a free public stretch at each end is where the locals prefer to swim.

In high summer (mid-July to late August) the beach is genuinely full and the resort overrun with German and Austrian families. June and September are calmer and the water is still warm. The eastern end, Bibione Pineda, is quieter and backed by a pine forest; Lido del Sole at the western end is rougher and less developed.

A story
Bibione was the first beach in Italy to ban smoking on the sand, in 2017, after years of complaints about cigarette butts. The rule spread rapidly along the Adriatic and is now standard on most Italian beach concessions.
