Bibione

Northern Adriatic beach resort built around eight kilometres of broad sand near Venice.

Bibione is a seaside resort on the northern Adriatic coast, about an hour's drive east of Venice. The town exists almost entirely for beach tourism — an eight-kilometre stretch of wide, fine sand backed by a solid wall of hotels, apartments, and holiday parks. It is extremely popular with German and Austrian families, and in summer the beach is packed.

The sand is genuinely good — broad, clean, and gently shelving, which makes it ideal for small children. The eastern end of the beach, Bibione Pineda, is quieter and backed by a pine forest. A thermal spa complex (Bibione Terme) draws visitors for its hot springs. Beyond the beach, there is not much to see in Bibione itself, but the Valle Vecchia lagoon behind the resort is a protected nature area with birdwatching opportunities, and the historic towns of Portogruaro and Concordia Sagittaria are a short drive inland.

The annual Sand Storm motorcycle races on the beach in June and the lighthouse walk at the eastern tip of the peninsula are worth knowing about. In summer there is a fast catamaran service direct to central Venice.

Day Trips

Venice is just over an hour away by car or by the Aspilus boat service that runs from the Bibione port to San Basilio in central Venice (about two and a half hours each way). Portogruaro, a small canal town with arcaded streets, and Concordia Sagittaria, a sleepy village built over the Roman colony of Iulia Concordia, are 15 km inland and easily combined. To the east, the Roman ruins at Aquileia and the lagoon island of Grado are both inside an hour.

Eating Out

The food in Bibione is mostly aimed at the holiday trade — pizza, pasta and fritto misto on every corner — but the proximity to the lagoon means good fish reaches the better restaurants quickly. Look for moeche (soft-shell crabs) in spring, granseola (spider crab) all summer, and bigoli in salsa (thick spaghetti with onion and anchovy) on most osterie menus. Local white wines from the Lison-Pramaggiore DOC are the natural pairing.

For a sit-down dinner, head to one of the older trattorias on the inland side of the resort rather than the seafront chains. Inland in Lugugnana or San Michele al Tagliamento you will find places used mostly by Italian visitors.
