Teatro Accademico

The Teatro Accademico is an elegant late-eighteenth-century theatre tucked inside the walls, designed by Francesco Maria Preti in 1746 and opened to the public in 1780. It is a perfect small Venetian opera house: three tiers of boxes in deep red and gold, a sky-painted ceiling, an intimate horseshoe plan that puts every seat within reach of the stage.

The theatre still functions, hosting a winter season of classical music, opera and prose. Guided visits are possible during the day when nothing is being rehearsed. Even without a performance the interior is worth seeing, particularly the painted curtain by Giovanni Scajaro and the trompe-l'oeil ceiling.
