The Canale di Mezzo, the central canal that cuts through the old town from the lake to the Mincio river, is the heart of Peschiera. Fishing boats line the embankments, painted in bright colours, and the small wooden footbridges and stone walls have changed little in two centuries. The lake ferry pier is at the canal's mouth.
The waterfront is busiest at sunset, when the cafes along the canal fill and the boats glow against the water. A walk from Porta Verona along the canal to the harbour mouth takes about ten minutes and gives the most photogenic views in town. The ferry station beside the harbour serves regular boats to Sirmione, Garda, Bardolino, and the western shore towns.
