Passo Tre Croci

Passo Tre Croci sits at 1,809 metres between San Vito di Cadore and Cortina d'Ampezzo, a short drive north of the village on the SS48 road. The pass is the main trailhead for the approach to Lago di Sorapiss — the starting point of the three-hour return walk to the vivid turquoise lake beneath the Sorapiss walls — and offers its own spectacular views across the Dolomites without leaving the car park.

From Tre Croci the road drops northwest into Cortina, and the panorama from the pass takes in the Cristallo massif to the north and the bulk of Sorapiss to the south. In summer the meadows around the pass are crossed by trails in several directions. In winter the road is kept clear but can be icy; chains or snow tyres are mandatory. The pass is easily combined with a morning in Cortina and an afternoon walk to the Sorapiss lake.

A story
The pass takes its name — "Three Crosses" — from a set of roadside crucifixes that marked the crossing point for travellers moving between the Ampezzo and Comelico valleys in the era before motor roads. The stone crosses still stand beside the modern road, largely unnoticed by drivers who stop only for the panorama.
