The great Gothic brick church of San Polo, and one of the most rewarding in a city full of extraordinary churches. Titian's Assumption of the Virgin (1518) over the high altar is widely considered the greatest painting in Venice — a swirling composition of reds and golds that dominates the entire nave. Also contains Titian's own tomb, Donatello's wooden John the Baptist, and Bellini's triptych in the sacristy.
Allow an hour. The adjacent Scuola Grande di San Rocco, a short walk away, houses Tintoretto's vast cycle of paintings and is equally unmissable.
