Rialto Market

Venice's daily fish and produce market — best seen before noon

The Rialto market has operated on the San Polo bank of the Grand Canal since 1097, making it one of the oldest continuously running food markets in Europe. It divides into two sections: the Pescheria (fish market), open Tuesday to Saturday until around noon, and the Erberia (produce market), which runs daily. Together they offer the clearest picture of what Venetians actually eat.

The fish market is extraordinary — not just for the variety of Adriatic and lagoon seafood on the slabs, but for the atmosphere of a working market that has barely changed in function for centuries. Look for lagoon specialities like moleche (soft-shell crab, seasonal), schie (tiny grey shrimp), and caparossoli (clams). The best time to arrive is between 8am and 10am when the selection is at its peak and the market vendors are still moving.
