Church of the Holy Emperor Uroš

The Church of the Holy Emperor Uroš is a Serbian Orthodox church in the centre of Ferizaj, dedicated to the last ruler of the medieval Nemanjić dynasty. The current building is relatively modern — the original medieval association was maintained through rebuilding over the centuries — but the site carries considerable symbolic weight in the context of Kosovo's complex history.

The church stands a short distance from the central mosque and market area. It is a KFOR-protected site, guarded by Greek soldiers from the Hellas Battalion of the Multinational Brigade East. Access for visitors has generally been possible, but it is worth asking at the gate. The combination of an Orthodox church and a mosque in such close proximity, in a town that is now overwhelmingly Albanian-speaking, is a concrete reminder of the territory's layered history.

A story
The church is named for Stefan Uroš V, the last Nemanjić king of medieval Serbia, who died without an heir in 1371 and triggered decades of fragmentation that left Serbia vulnerable to the Ottoman advance. The site in Ferizaj was associated with the Nemanjić legacy long before the current church was built. Since the 1999 war, the building has been under continuous KFOR protection — one of dozens of Serbian Orthodox sites in Kosovo guarded by international peacekeepers as part of arrangements that remain in place more than two decades later.
