Atik Mosque

Gjilan's oldest mosque, a compact Ottoman-era landmark near the centre of town.

Atik Mosque is the old mosque of Gjilan, modest in size but important in a city where much of the Ottoman fabric has been thinned out by later rebuilding. Its name simply means "old", and the site is usually dated to the early 17th century, with later repairs and alterations. The low profile and small minaret make it easy to miss if you are expecting a grand Balkan mosque.

The mosque is active, so the usual rules apply: dress respectfully, keep visits brief, and avoid prayer times. It is worth adding to a short walk through central Gjilan with the old bazaar area and city park, especially because it gives the town a deeper historical anchor than the modern streets first suggest.
