When to Go

Kosovo has a continental climate, and Gjilan follows the same pattern: cold winters, hot summers, and two pleasant shoulder seasons in between. April through June is the best time to visit — temperatures are mild, the countryside around the city is green, and the light is good. September and October are similarly agreeable, with warm days and cooler evenings.

July and August bring real heat, and the city can feel dusty and airless at midday. Winter is cold and sometimes wet, but the city functions normally and the café culture is, if anything, more concentrated. The Gjilan Spring festival, held in April, is the city's main cultural event, bringing music and performances to the streets and public spaces. If you can time your visit to coincide with it, the city is at its most animated.
