The Old Bazaar — Çarshia e Vjetër — sits at the centre of Gjilan and has been the commercial heart of the city for centuries. Much of what stands here today was rebuilt or repaired after the 1999 war, but the layout of narrow lanes and small single-fronted shops still follows the old Ottoman pattern. It does not feel restored and polished so much as genuinely lived-in — the kind of market where people actually buy their groceries, hardware, and clothing.
Covered stalls and open shops sell local produce, white cheese, dried spices, textiles, and household goods. In the morning the bazaar is at its busiest, and it is one of the better places in Gjilan to hear the city's daily rhythms, smell something cooking from a nearby bakery, and watch trade conducted at the unhurried pace that has always characterised this corner of the Balkans.
