Currency: Latvia uses the euro. Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere in Riga and in larger towns; carry some cash for rural markets, small guesthouses, and roadside stalls.
Language: Latvian is the official language. English is widely spoken in Riga and in the tourism industry. Russian is commonly understood, particularly in the east and among older residents.
Visas: Latvia is part of the Schengen Area. Citizens of the EU, US, UK, Canada, Australia, and many other countries can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. From 2025, visa-exempt travellers need to obtain ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) authorisation before arrival — check the official ETIAS website for current requirements.
Electricity: 220V, 50Hz; standard European two-pin plugs.
Climate: Summers are warm (17–22°C in July), with long days. Winters are cold and grey, with temperatures often below freezing in January and February. Spring and autumn bring mild but changeable weather.
National holidays: New Year's Day (1 Jan), Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day (1 May), Restoration of Independence (4 May), Midsummer (23–24 Jun), Proclamation of Independence (18 Nov), Christmas (24–26 Dec).
Safety: Latvia is generally safe for travellers. Normal urban caution applies in Riga — be aware of pickpockets in the Old Town and around the central market.
