Walking covers most of what visitors want to see. The Old Town and the Art Nouveau district on Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela are about 15 minutes apart on foot; together they make a natural half-day walking circuit.
Trams and buses are cheap and frequent. The network is extensive and the stops are signed in Latvian with route numbers. Buy tickets from the driver or validate e-tickets on the card reader inside the vehicle. A single journey costs around €1.15. Tram 11 runs between the Old Town and the Art Nouveau district; tram 1 reaches the Open Air Ethnographic Museum.
Cycling is practical in the flat city centre. Several rental companies operate near the Old Town and the Central Market; Sixt and various dockless schemes are available. The Daugava river embankment has a dedicated cycle path.
Taxis are metered and generally honest. The main apps are Bolt (formerly Taxify) and Yandex.Taxi; both are cheaper than flagging a cab on the street. Agree the fare before getting in if you use an unmarked taxi.
The Old Town is mostly pedestrianised; driving in the centre is not useful and parking is expensive.
