Getting There

By air: Riga International Airport (RIX) is 10 kilometres southwest of the centre. Bus 22 runs to the central bus and train station; the journey takes about 30 minutes. Taxis to the centre take 15–20 minutes in normal traffic. airBaltic, the Latvian national carrier, operates a wide network of European routes from Riga. Several budget airlines also serve the airport.

By bus: Riga is well connected by long-distance bus to Tallinn (4 hours), Vilnius (4 hours), Warsaw (11 hours), and other Baltic and European cities. Lux Express and FlixBus are the main operators. The international bus terminal is next to the central train station, in a modern building adjacent to the Central Market.

By train: Rail connections are limited internationally. Trains run to Tallinn, Vilnius, and Moscow, but the most useful services are the domestic commuter trains to Jūrmala (25 minutes) and other Latvian towns. The main station is central and well signed.

By ferry: Riga's passenger ferry terminal is on the right bank of the Daugava. Tallink operates overnight ferries to Stockholm (17 hours), a scenic option if time allows.
